Parents have a great opportunity to be involved with the learning activities going on in their child's classroom by taking part in a daily homework ritual. In first grade, our homework consists of skills that we have learned during classroom instruction time. The quality time that you spend with your child reinforcing these skills will help to ensure success in your child's academic growth. It is most beneficial if homework is completed at home,  at a designated time, and in a room free of distractions. Assigned reading is a very important part of nightly homework.   Listen to your child read at least 15 minutes each night in a stress-free environment. Make this a special time for you and your child to share. Remember to use plenty of positive reinforcement!  In this way your child will gain a love for reading and associate reading with a warm, relaxing feeling. Ask your child to retell the story back to you to check for comprehension. They should be able to tell you about the setting, characters, important details and main idea of each story. Remember to give your child a hug afterward to let him/her know how proud both you and I are of them. Always look over your child's homework to check for understanding, and then initial their homework sheet to let me know you have reviewed it with your child. Good homework habits begin early, so let's work hard to establish them in the first grade! To view the math and reading homework, click on the  appropriate link below.
